National Two North – Wharfedale

Wharfedale 5 – 26 Hull Ionians On a wet and windy afternoon, a good crowd saw Dale take on National Division One team Hull Ionians. Both teams had large squads and both sets of coaches had the chance to look at a variety of players. An entertaining game was spoilt a little by handling errors from both sets of players. Hull were the more consistent side winning by four tries to one. Hull kicked off with the slope and the blustery wind in their favour. Strong running in the centre allowed the visitors to open the scoring with Lewis Minikin bursting through. Chris Lound added the two points. I’s extended their lead when a good move right allowed Steve Slingsby to...

National Two North – Hinckley

National Two North Hinckley’s first fixture in preparation for their return to National 2 ended in a 26 – 10 defeat to National 2 South side Clifton on Saturday, with some very positive signs shown, although execution at times was certainly lacking. After a challenging journey down, which lead to the kick off having to be delayed, first team debuts where given to fly half Callum Rowe, a product of the club’s colts system, centre Glenn Murray, full back Scott Hamilton and also centre Andy Lally coming off the bench. David Peck also started his first game on his return from South Leicester. Mark Deaville captained the side for the first time in the absence of Alex Salt. The first half...

National Two North – Pre-Season test for Leicester Lions

A huge pre-season test for the Lions First team Squad this year to prepare for the season ahead! The Lions will be truly tested when they travel to Leeds to take on a Yorkshire Carnegie XV on Saturday 27th August. “This will be the perfect test and work out for the team just before we take on Tynedale at home the following week. It is important to challenge the squad whilst at the same time giving them the opportunity to see what it takes to become a Championship club. I know the players are looking forward to this game already," said Head Coach Andy Key. The game will take place at Harrogate RFC ground and KO will be at 2pm on...

National Two North – Leicester Lions Update

The National Two North season 2015/16 saw the 1st team finishing 3rd in the league having won 19 out of 30 games. With the change at Head Coach in February in Andy Key I think you will agree we saw a remarkable change in the way the team played, which ultimately saw them pushing for promotion through some impressive performances both at home and on the road. With the immanent opening of the new clubhouse and the re-signing of Andy, the club finds itself in an exciting time. It is clear from both Andy’s and the clubs plans; promotion into Division 1 is very much achievable. An area of the plans going forward is to improve on our communication to all...

National Two North – Wharfedale

National Two North -  Wharfedale is in the the Yorkshire Dales, an area of great natural beauty, known for its green rolling hills, its limestone scars, its country inns. Sportsmen come for its shooting, its trout fishing, its fell-walking, its potholing, its extreme rock-climbing – and its rugby. For Grassington (or to be more accurate its sister village Threshfield) is home to Wharfedale rugby club. Nothing exceptional about a Yorkshire village having its own rugby team, except that Wharfedale rugby club plies its trade in National Division One, in the top forty clubs in England and is about to commence its 18th season at that level. The introduction of league rugby in 1987 was great news for this ambitious village club....

National Two North – Scunthorpe

National Two North Scunthorpe RUFC was founded in 1929 when the club rented a field from a local farmer at a cost of £8.00 per season with the proviso that the goal posts be moved after each game so that the animals could return to graze. Scunthorpe Rugby Club has come a long way since those early days; days when there were a total of 33 players on the books in an era which viewed the world of rugby through rather confused eyes, so much so that the local press referred to the “First Eleven” during the clubs first season. There was gradual growth during those early days and by 1933 there was a grand total of £4 3s 7d...

National Two North – Sedgley Park

For National Two North side Sedgley Park following their recent bitter disappointment of losing out to Old Albanians in the NL2 playoff game, Tigers have it all to do again starting off with Caldy So its a repeat of a couple of seasons ago as Sedge take on recent boggy side Caldy to get the 2016-17 league campaign going at Park Lane on September the 3rd. All Tigers home games are scheduled as they have been for many a season for a 14.30 kick off. So with it all to do again with lots of very tough games ahead meeting up with lots of old friends in what is becoming a very tough league. Looking at the rest of the fixtures shown below,...

National Two North – Hinckley

National Two North Hinckley was founded in 1892 However there are rumours that rugby has been played in Hinckley since 1880. But at the end of 1892 the Hinckley Rugby club's inaugural meeting was held at Hinckley Grammar School (New Buildings), the ground was to be the George Croft (the fairground) and the headquarters based at the George Hotel. The first matches fully reported were in 1893. Stoneygate, Belgrave, Newbold-on-Avon, Coalville, Aylestone St. James, Westleigh were the order of the day in these formulative years, plus teams now long forgotten. For example, in 1905 Hinckley were playing in the Leicestershire Rugby Union Combination Division III against the likes of Leicester Harlequins, Inglesants, Gas and Electric, West End and Wheatsheaf. Heady...
