National Two Play-Off Old Albanian Go Up

In the National Two play-off Old Albanian made a speedy return to National One to join National Two North champions Macclesfield and South champions Cambridge after beating second in N2N Sedgley Park 24-0 at Woollams earlier today. The day belong to Old Albanian full back Max Malins who crossed for his side's opening try as well as slotting the conversion and four penalties, Neil Foster the second try scorer for the home side. In a game that for long periods proved to be an 'arm wrestle' between two well matched sides was won in the end by the well drilled home side's greater experience and pace out wide which the Manchester side for all their efforts were unable to match or...

National 2 South. Season 2015/2016 Review

National 2 South Champions, Cambridge, fully deserved promotion to National 1 with 130 points. Only Ealing Trailfinders (2009/10) and Old Albanian (2011/12) have managed 2 points more since the advent of 16 teams and 30 games. Old Albanian await the Play Off on May 14th against Sedgley Park for testimony of a one season return to the third tier of English rugby. Bishop's Stortford having "doubled" their neighbours Cambridge, finished 3rd one place below their least season's unsuccessful play off challenge. More about the victors later. Dorking having end 2014/2015 in 4th place were relegated alongside Southend Saxons and the luckless and rudderless Cornish All Blacks (Launceston). Southend head the longest standing list for National 2 South with 755...

National 2 South Week 29. Review

As the closest run in to the finishing line, a climactic week for the National 2 South league leaders; for the less fortunate, just too little too late, as the third relegation place was determined. It is not "over" at the top by any means. Cambridge took the A14 to nearby Bury St Edmunds and lost their third game to another local club. A shock to the system? Indeed and unexpected. Another example where pride and passion are often generated by traditional rivalries but in unequal measure in favour of the underdog. It was a very high scoring game on a very firm pitch. Just the three defeats this season for Cambridge and one game to go. The link between...

National 2 South Week 27.Review

Wins at the top as Southend Saxons lose at Cambridge and OE's at OA's. A final furlong fast finish from Cambridge and Albanian; neck and neck in National 2 South with just a 5 point win separating the clubs and an exactly equal points scored difference of 464. Two games to go, Cambridge at Bury and OA's at Barnes, both hosts capable of springing surprises. As to Week 30, home against against relegated clubs unless Dorking spring a surprise of their own at Worthing this coming Saturday. So as competitions go, interest retained through to Play Off Saturday.(7th May 2016). Predictions Week 27 Winner Cambridge - Southend Saxons Old Albanian - Old Elthamians Otherwise a 100% prediction success for many. All home wins...

National 2 South Preview Weeks 28, 29 & 30

Scarves out once again for Week 28 as the spring recedes and a northern wind chill combines with occasional rain as the National 2 South season slides away. Better then to focus on the finishing straight three match weekends below. Two weeks where the stronger in form home side should prevail, separated by a week of 5 probable away wins for Taunton Titans, Old Albanian, Cambridge, Redruth and Bishop's Stortford. In effect the current 5 top teams in the league. It isn't over yet by any means. Bury St Edmund's and Barnes, pleased with their 1st season's performance at level 4 will be seeking a final flourish or two. Chinnor could add a sixth at Redingensians in Week 29; a...

National 2 South. Week 27 Review. Closing in.

A defining week for Cambridge (1st) as they close in on finishing top of National 2 South. As in most of the south, showers and wind power influenced the games; the ground however is firm and near perfect for exhibition rugby. Redingensians were the hosts; well beaten by a disciplined Cambridge side in spite of a morale boosting, 7 match winning run. They opened the scoring and then repeated the event in the second half. The Reds were yellow carded between scores; a 10 minute window for their opponents to dominate; Cambridge were pressing and already had 60%+ possession. Ball handling at a significantly faster pace was unrelenting, left then right, wide then close. The league leaders error rate...

National 2 South. Week 27 Preview.

National 2 South Week 27 Preview. Another fascinating week of spring rugby bin the south. Winner in bold. Redingensians Rams - Cambridge Clifton - Old Albanian Neither game for the promotion chasers is a guaranteed away win. The National 2 South league Championship is still a tooth & nail, cheek by jowl affair between old rivals Albanian and Cambridge Both should win but both could falter. Whatever, the added bonus points are going to be crucial in just 3 weeks time. Winning at home against the top two, has to be the motivator at Redingensians and Clifton. Barnes - Chinnor Cornish All Blacks - Bishops Stortford Old Elthamians - Redruth Southend Saxons - Bury St. Edmunds Taunton Titans - Dorking Worthing Raiders - Canterbury Tip to toe, top to bottom, CAB...

National 2 South Week 26 Review. End in sight.

It was top 5 teams unchanged, with 5 games remaining in National 2 South. Now 4 games to go and less likelihood of an order upset. Cambridge lead by 5 league points and a substantial points difference given the size of the scoop from their home game against the Cornish All Blacks. It does not represent the game fairly to dwell on cricket score defeats, I will leave that to others. Cambridge however can be proud with their season's record, losing only 2 and securing 113 league points; a challenge to complete the season with 130 points +, a feat rarely achieved in English National rugby. Of merit is the league table for top try scorers; the first 4...
