Yorkshire Cup Final

Harrogate 38   Sheffield Tigers 3 Sheffield Tigers competed strongly throughout the game but Harrogate cruised to a comfortable win to retain the Yorkshire Cup for a second year.  The Final was played at Pontefract which is where Harrogate’s captain, Jake Brady, started his rugby along with his younger brother, Sam.  It was very fitting that the Brady brothers each scored a try in the Final Harrogate’s scrum, which was dominant throughout the match, forced Sheffield to concede an early penalty and Lewis Minikin’s kick opened the score.  Almost immediately, Harrogate were penalised for a side entry and Mark Ireland duly equalised for Tigers.  Ten minutes into the game, Sheffield’s defence failed to deal with an attacking Callum Irvine cross kick and...

Petrus Du Plessis – Mr Dependable

Petrus Du Plessis' form has been turning heads. Always Saracens' Mr Dependable, his performances for Saracens so far this season at the set-piece have been one of many stand-outs of a superb campaign for the reigning Aviva Premiership champions. Petrus Du Plessis’ rugby roots may be steeped in the Rainbow Nation of South Africa, but is the UK in which he has made a name for himself as one the countries finest scrummagers. Of course, with a name such of Du Plessis there are no prizes for guessing where he hails from. His step-grandfather, Buurman Van Zyl, is a Pretorian rugby legend having built Northern Transvaal (now the Blue Bulls) into one of South Africa’s rugby powerhouses in a 13-year stint...

BILL BEAUMONT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

DURHAM 40 CHESHIRE 52 Durham welcomed Cheshire to Darlington Mowden Park’s Northern Echo Arena on Saturday 23rd May 2015 as they brought their 2015 County Championship series to a close.                   On a beautiful sunny afternoon Cheshire kicked off the game. From the outset both sides seemed intent on making the most of the excellent conditions running the ball whenever possible. Durham in fact suffered a double blow as number 8 Sam MILLER suffered a calf injury which caused him to have to leave the field not to return. The...

Bill Beaumont County Champioship

It's crunch time at the Woodlands on Saturday, as Lancashire entertain Yorkshire in the final pool game of the Bill Beaumont Cup, for the right to represent the North Division at Twickenham in next Sunday's final. Although Cheshire are in with a shout of the final, the likely contenders will be at Fylde on Saturday, with Lancashire's head coach Mark Nelson looking ahead to this enticing clash: "This game is tee'd up as a semi-final, although Cheshire have a chance to go through. We have to win, it's as simple as that. With the fixtures we were given, we always knew that we would have to win all our games." "Against Cheshire and Durham we had two away games against defensively-minded...

BILL BEAUMONT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

DURHAM 6   LANCASHIRE  17 Durham entertained last seasons County champions Lancashire at Blaydon on Saturday in the second round of Bill Beaumont County Championship games. The visitor’s starting line up included no less than 11 players from National 1 side Fylde with another of their number starting on the bench.  In blustery conditions the game started well for Durham when after only four minutes play they were awarded a penalty on the visitors’ 10 metre line for an offence at the ruck. Skipper Peter EVANS confidently put his kick through the posts to open the scoring. He was to be unsuccessful with his next attempt not long afterwards when his kick from 30 metres out on the left of the...
